Water Plant Operator - Utilities Water Division

The City of Topeka is seeking a dedicated individual to join its Utility Department. This is an entry-level position that is responsible for the daily operation of the water treatment plant. On-the-job training is available.

Primary duties include:

  • Monitoring water levels and making appropriate pump changes.
  • Collecting water samples, performing chemical tests, and making appropriate changes in chemical feed rates.
  • Record and Document plant performance and chemicals administered to water supply.
  • Diagnose equipment problems and determines remedial action and performs general plant maintenance.

This position may include shift work and weekends: day shift works 7 AM – 3 PM, evening shift works 3 - 11 PM and night shift works 11 PM - 7 AM. $1.00 additional per hour for evening and weekend hours.

Minimum qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience in the operation of a water treatment plant and facilities is desirable. Must have and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license and city insurable driving record.

  • WPO Class III requires a Kansas Department of Health and Environment Class III water operator license.
  • WPO Class IV requires a Kansas Department of Health and Environment Class IV water operator license

Entry rate of pay: $24.26 per hour, plus an additional $1.00 per hour for night shift hours.
