Senior Accounting Specialist

The City of Topeka is seeking an experienced professional to join its team as the Senior Accounting Specialist in the Accounting division. This position is responsible for coordinating accounts receivable data entry, invoicing, and payments to ensure receivables are booked, invoiced and received in a timely manner. This position also maintains master receivables files within the City’s financial system, assists in the monthly and annual close process, and prepares financial reports as needed.

What you'll do:

  • Report daily cash activity, monitor online payment systems, and provide reporting and data backup to cash and deposit functions.
  • Respond to inquiries from accounts receivable debtors.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual billing as needed.
  • Maintain the master receivable files within the City’s financial system.

The ideal candidate:

  • Is highly organized with excellent attention to detail.
  • Has the ability to meet deadlines while working under pressure.
  • Is knowledgeable in the bookkeeping principles, office methods, and practices as applied to standard accounting transactions.
  • Has excellent communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a closely related field is preferred.
    • With an associate’s degree, five years of professional level accounting experience preparing financial statements and reports, developing and monitoring budgets, monitoring grant expenditures and reimbursements, and/or general ledger, cost or fund accounting is required.
  • Without an associate’s degree, a high school diploma or its equivalent is required with seven years of professional level accounting experience preparing financial statements and reports, developing and monitoring budgets, monitoring grant expenditures and reimbursements, and/or general ledger, cost or fund accounting is required.
  • Additional licenses or certifications may be required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license and must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka’s insurance carrier.

Entry rate of pay: $26.14 - $31.25 per hour, depending on qualifications
