Engineering Technician I - Construction Inspection

The City of Topeka is seeking an experienced construction professional to join its Construction Inspection team as an Engineering Technician I. This is a technical position that is responsible for construction surveying, interpreting plans and specifications, documenting construction activities and other related engineering work.

What you'll do:

  • Inspect new construction, renovation and repair work for quality, materials and workmanship to ensure compliance.
  • Prepare and maintain construction progress reports and material testing documentation.
  • Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, maps, legal descriptions and exhibits.
  • Perform soil, concrete, asphalt, utility and a variety of other materials testing in both a field and laboratory setting.

The ideal candidate:

  • Is relationship-driven, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Has knowledge of the construction industry, to include construction standards, related ordinances, and common materials and tools.
  • Understands the principles of engineering drafting.
  • Has an aptitude for technology.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent is required.
  • One year of experience in construction or construction inspection field or one year of high school level training in the construction trade or engineering field is required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C Kansas driver’s license and city-insurable driving record. Please click here to review the City’s insurability guidelines.
  • Must possess or obtain within one year of employment:
    • ACI level I certification
    • Work Zone Safety or Traffic Control Management equivalent certification
    • Nuclear Guage safety certification

Entry Rate of Pay: $19.26 - $20.16 per hour, depending on qualifications
