Collection Systems Operator - Water Pollution Control

The City of Topeka's Utilities department is seeking a hard-working individual to serve as a Collection Systems Operator in the Water Pollution Control division. This is an entry-level position that plays a key role in the department’s mission of protecting the health and safety of our community through storm and wastewater management.

This position has an excellent field training program to support incumbents in obtaining the training and certifications needed for advancement. Training, study time, certifications, uniforms and equipment are all provided by the City.

Additionally, this position will receive training and assistance on company-paid time to obtain a Class A Kansas commercial driver’s license (CDL), which is required by the conclusion of six months of employment.

This position works Monday through Friday and is a year-round, full-time role that works in all weather conditions.

What you'll do:

  • Operate and maintain a wide variety of heavy equipment.
  • Respond and assist to Utility-related calls such as overflows and blockages.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on wastewater and storm water collection systems, flood control assets and facilities.
  • Electronically report and update daily work activities.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has experience operating a wide variety of heavy equipment or a drive to learn.
  • Thrives in a mobile work environment and possesses excellent navigational skills.
  • Is a highly motivated self-starter who thrives in a team-oriented, changing work environment.
  • Has an aptitude for technology or a willingness to learn.

Minimum qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license and must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka’s insurance carrier. Please review the Insurability Guidelines.

Entry rate of pay: $20.06- $20.64 per hour, depending on qualifications
