The City of Topeka is seeking a professional engineer who is passionate about making a difference in their community to lead our Engineering Division.

The incumbent is responsible for the preparation of plans, specifications and estimates for public improvement projects; this individual is also responsible for supervising the design and construction of these projects. Additionally, the City Engineer is responsible for performing all surveying and engineering work under the direction of the Public Works Director. This position will have direct authority over the Engineering Division and will also assist the Department Director with projects and initiatives related to Public Works service delivery.

Primary duties include:

  • Communications: The City Engineer is responsible for communicating initiatives, issues, and other items related to the City, Department, and assigned divisions.
  • Operations: The City Engineer is responsible for direct management of personnel and related services within assigned divisions.
  • Budgeting: The City Engineer is responsible for preparation and implementation of Operating and Capital Budgets for assigned divisions.
  • Asset and Performance Management: The City Engineer is responsible for preparation and implementation of asset and performance management in assigned divisions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Must have ten (10) years of professional engineering management experience with at least five (5) years in a supervisory position.
  • Must be registered as Professional Engineer in the state of Kansas or have the ability to obtain Kansas reciprocity within six months of hire date.
  • Must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka's insurance carrier and must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Valid Kansas driver's license is required within six months of hire date.

Annual entry rate of pay: $115,000 - $140,000 DOQ
