Inventory Specialist - Police Evidence Room

The City of Topeka’s Police Department is seeking a highly organized individual to serve in its property room. This position assists with the intake, cataloging, and data entry for all items placed in the department’s property. The incumbent is also responsible for checking out and/or releasing property to officers as well as the owners of recovered property and is expected to maintain a record of the chain of custody of each item.

What you'll do:

  • Perform intake functions for all items turned into the property room or property lockers.
  • Maintain records of property, including maintaining an accurate chain of custody, for all items.
  • Identify and prepare items for review by the property committee as needed.
  • Respond to questions and inquiries from citizens and officers.

  • Is highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Has an aptitude for technology or a willingness to learn.
  • Is a critical thinker with the ability to problem-solve.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of clerical experience.
  • Must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka insurance carrier and possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license.
  • Must pass an extensive background check.
  • Certification by the Kansas Highway Patrol for the operation of NCIC terminals must be obtained within the first six months of employment and thereafter every two years.

Entry Rate of Pay: $16.09 - $17.08 per hour, DOQ
