Plans Reviewer - Planning & Development

The City of Topeka is seeking a dedicated individual to serve as a Plans Reviewer on its Development Services team. This position will review commercial project plans for projects within the City of Topeka.

What you'll do:

  • Examine building plans for all non-structural issues to ensure compliance with locally adopted ordinances and building codes and regulations.
    • Consult with architects, engineers, contractors, developers and the public as required.
  • Conduct preliminary building investigations for proposed construction.
  • Work closely with City staff and design professionals to keep projects moving forward for the issuance of permits.

The ideal candidate:

  • Is highly skilled in problem-solving with the ability to make sound decisions.
  • Is comfortable prioritizing tasks and managing multiple deadlines.
  • Has exceptional customer service skills and the ability to interact with a diverse audience.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in architecture, engineering, construction science or a related field is required.
    • Without a degree, a high school diploma or equivalent is required as well as four years’ experience in construction, plan review and code enforcement that is focused on building construction. Experience working with commercial building projects is preferred.
  • Certification as an International Code Council (ICC) plans examiner is required within the first 18 months of employment as a plans reviewer.
  • Plans Reviewers – Plans Examiners Levels II-V require ICC Certification with level determined by years of certification of up to six plus years.
  • Must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka insurance carrier and possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license.

Entry Rate of Pay:

Plans Reviewer I: $25.77 per hour
Plans Reviewer II – V: $28.91 - $36.32 per hour, DOQ
