Multi-Modal Transportation Planner I or Planner II - Planning & Development

The City of Topeka (population 128,000) is seeking qualified candidates for a well-rounded planner to join our team.

Topeka is the Capital of the State of Kansas rich with history, diverse neighborhoods, and economic momentum including a major public/private partnership for the revitalization of Topeka’s historic Downtown.

This is entry-level to advanced work, involving duties in the area of regional and community planning and transportation planning. Works under general supervision with work reviewed for results achieved. Familiar with Federal, State, and local laws and regulations governing multi-modal transportation operations and community planning.

What you’ll do:

  • Work with bikeways, pedestrian, and vehicular travel systems.

  • Implementing the Topeka Bikeways Master Plan, The Pedestrian Plan, The Complete Streets Guidelines, and other Transportation related documents.

  • Assist in establishing the city as a bicycle friendly Community.

We expect the successful candidate will build upon many recent accomplishments which include our award-winning Land Use and Growth Management Plan 2040, Bikeways and Pedestrian Master Plans, Complete Street Guidelines, Neighborhood Conservation Districts, Non-Residential Building Design Standards, comprehensive Sign Code update, and the citywide Housing Market Study and Strategy, and Downtown Master Plan.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has knowledge in modern transportation system operating principles and practices.

  • Has knowledge in Geographic Information Services (GIS) mapping and software.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and ability to learn related software.

Minimum Qualifications:

Planner I: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in Urban Planning or a related field is required plus a minimum of one year of experience in Urban Planning, or a Master’s degree in Urban Planning.

  • Preference will be given to applicants who have a Master’s degree in Urban Planning.

Planner II: Masters degree in Community and Regional Planning or a related concentration. Two years experience working in Community and Regional Planning. (Five years of experience in municipal planning may be substituted for the Masters Degree requirement.)

All candidates must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be insurable within The City's guidelines.
