Zoning Inspector - Planning & Development Services

The City of Topeka is seeking a qualified individual to serve as its Zoning Inspector. This is an entry-level inspection position that works to secure compliance with municipal ordinances and regulations governing zoning requirements. This position investigates complaints and enforces the Comprehensive Zoning Regulations and Sign Code for the City of Topeka.

What you'll do:

  • Resolve code violations.
  • Work with individuals on permits that require on-site inspections.
  • Coordinate enforcement efforts with appropriate City of Topeka staff and outside agencies to accomplish department and City organization goals.
  • Prepare materials related to zoning and sign issues and testify in court as needed.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with course work in planning or a related field.
  • Two years’ experience in code enforcement, planning, or a related field.
  • A combination of education and experience can be substituted for the above requirements.
  • Must be insurable within standards set by the City of Topeka's insurance carrier and must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
  • Must obtain ICC (International Code Counsel) and KACE (Kansas Association of Code Enforcement) certification within 18 months of hire date.

Entry rate of pay: $20.59 per hour
