Mechanical Inspector - Development Services / Planning Dept.

The City of Topeka is seeking two qualified professionals to serve as Mechanical Inspectors in its Development Services division. This position is responsible for inspecting residential and commercial construction. These individuals work to secure compliance with municipal ordinances and regulations governing the mechanical code and investigates complaints as needed.

What you’ll do:

  • Inspect residential and light commercial construction for compliance to all applicable codes and regulations.
  • Follow up on inspections and violations to secure compliance.
  • Investigate complaints, prepare related reports, letters and violation notices, and follow through until compliance has been attained.
  • Work with individuals to resolve concerns, problems and violations related to mechanical inspections.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Knowledge of the mechanical construction industry.
  • The ability to learn and apply code regulations in accordance with their intent.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact clearly and professionally in all situations.
  • A strong attention to detail.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Mechanical Journeyman certification is required.
  • Must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka’s insurance carrier and possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license.
  • Mechanical Inspector I must obtain mechanical inspector certification within 18 months of hire date.
  • The Mechanical Inspector II level must be certified as a mechanical inspector.

Entry rate of pay: $20.59 - $23.73 per hour depending on qualifications
