The City of Topeka is seeking a professional engineer to serve as its Wastewater Utility Engineer. This is professional civil engineering work involving supervising, coordinating and administering major utility wastewater projects and programs. Work involves supervising and participating in the design, planning, and scheduling of utility wastewater projects, including overseeing the work of contractors and consultants. It also involves the performance of special studies and projects, writing reports and findings, administration of contracts, and meeting with individuals and groups to discuss utility wastewater projects.

Primary duties include:

  • Serve as project leader on utility wastewater projects, coordinates and oversees the work of consultants and contractors, prepare project schedules, monitor progress, and finalize projects.
  • Review construction plans submitted by private sector design professionals involving utility wastewater. Evaluate engineering designs by applying accepted engineering principles to specific construction proposals to determine their conformance with the City of Topeka Standard Specifications and good engineering practices. Direct, coordinate and review professional consulting firms work in the preparation of feasibility studies and reports.
  • Prepare preliminary and final plans for a variety of wastewater projects including projects in the collection system and wastewater treatment plants, incidental construction design, tabulate quantities and prepare cost estimates, write and evaluate pertinent special and technical conditions and prepare contract documents.
  • Inspect construction sites to ensure the correct application of all policies, specifications, plans, maps, and other documents related to the project. Provide professional engineering advice as required on all utility wastewater projects.

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or related field. Must be registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of KS or have the ability to obtain KS reciprocity within six months of hire date. Must have at least two years of engineering experience in wastewater collection and treatment systems including planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance and asset management with at least two years as a project manager Must possess and maintain a valid KS class C driver’s license and City-insurable driving record.

Entry annual salary: $100,000 - $130,000 DOQ
