The City of Topeka is seeking qualified candidates for a Traffic Engineer position.

The Traffic Engineer performs professional civil engineering work that involves managing safe and efficient traffic flow movement in the City of Topeka as well as general traffic planning, designs traffic control devices, directs traffic studies, evaluates the effectiveness of traffic control measures, and works with other local governmental agencies to coordinate traffic management.

Primary duties include:

  • Coordinates with contractors, developers, City divisions, and outside agencies in relation to traffic disruptions, traffic studies and traffic management. Responds to inquiries from public citizens.
  • Reviews and approves traffic control/detour plans and pavement marking plans and coordinates with other project engineers to develop traffic control for City projects. Attends preconstruction conferences.
  • Supervises a traffic engineering technician by directing workload, developing skills, answering questions, hiring and assessing performance.
  • Directs the preparation of plans, inspects and reviews technical designs for City projects. Collaborates with consulting engineers regarding design and specifications and recommends changes as appropriate.
  • Designs and oversees traffic studies, traffic counts and accident data collection. Coordinates with other divisions and departments to provide data.
  • Attends public hearings and prepares and delivers presentations on behalf of the City for major public works projects in order to answer citizen’s questions.
  • Works with Transportation Field Operations to coordinate signal installation, signal timing and other traffic control items.

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or related field. Must possess a Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Kansas. If the license is from another state, must obtain a Kansas license within 6 months of hire date. Must have five years of engineering experience after obtaining the PE license with at least three years of engineering experience in traffic operations including planning, design, construction and operations and experience in project manager and supervisory functions.

Entry annual salary: $100,000 - $130,000, DOQ
