Stormwater Engineering Technician I - Utilities

The Stormwater Engineering Technician I reviews stormwater projects, stormwater management plans and drainage reports. Additionally, the position is responsible for construction inspections, construction surveying, interpretation of plans and specifications, and documentation of construction activities for utility infrastructure. Position may also determine scope of work for repairs and oversee work being done.

Primary duties include:

  • Performs initial review of civil plans for stormwater projects and construction project submittals to ensure they comply with the City's technical specifications.
  • Performs initial review of stormwater management plans including worksheets required for level of service to ensure they meet the requirements of the MARC Manual.
  • Performs initial review of drainage reports to ensure the hydrologic and hydraulic analyses are correctly done and meet the City's design criteria for stormwater quantity.
  • Inspects stormwater projects, as well as BMP projects, for quality, materials and workmanship to ensure that all work complies with specifications, ordinances, City standards and contract documents.
  • Prepares and maintains construction progress reports. Notifies Stormwater Engineer of discrepancies and may temporarily suspend contractor's operation with sufficient cause with regards to the safety of construction personnel and the general public.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must have basic level Microsoft Office experience
  • Requires one year of experience in the construction and inspection field or one year of high school level training in the Engineering field.
  • APWA Construction Inspector Certification and or KDOT Level IIAC required or must be able to obtain within one year of employment.
  • Must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka insurance carrier and must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license. Must pass a pre-employment background check.

Entry rate of pay: $18.65 - $19.62 per hour, depending on qualifications
