The City of Topeka’s Development Services division is seeking an experienced professional to join its team as its Permitting Manager. This position plays a vital leadership role in overseeing the daily operations of the Permit section by ensuring permit processes are efficient, transparent, and within legal and safety standards and regulations.
What you'll do:
- Oversee operations of the Permit section, including review and approval processes for permits issued by Development Services.
- Supervise, evaluate and provide support to subordinate staff.
- Provide technical guidance and mediate the interpretation and application of building codes.
- Lead efforts to modernize and regularly update building and fire codes.
The ideal candidate:
- Is a collaborative leader with the ability to coach and motivate staff.
- Is highly organized with the ability to prioritize tasks and exercise sound judgment.
- Has excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Is knowledgeable about building regulations, codes, permit processes, and development standards.
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in architecture, architectural engineering, construction science or management, urban studies, planning, public administration or related field.
- With a Bachelor’s degree, five years of professional experience in building construction, project management, program/policy development, architectural design, plan review or related field is required.
- Without a Bachelor’s degree, a high school diploma or its equivalent is required with nine years of professional experience in building construction, project management, program/policy development, architectural design, plan review or related field is required.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license and city-insurable driving record.

- Previous supervisory experience is preferred; three or more years of supervisory experience is highly desirable.
Annual Entry Salary: $79,337 - $95,514 depending on qualifications
